Of all types of cancers, lung cancer is the primary cause of mortality. To reduce the high mortality rate, development of sensitive and specific techniques for the early diagnosis of lung cancer would be highly desirable. For preventive medicine in the future, one of the key technologies is a non-invasive diagnostic technique for identifying volatile biomarkers. In this work, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) derived from urine were extracted by solid phase micro extraction (SPME) and analyzed by gas chromatography time-of-flight mass spectrometer (GC-TOF MS). We compared the VOCs obtained from the urine of the tumor-bearing mice with the corresponding compounds from normal control mice. In order to detect volatile biomarkers for lung cancer more efficiently, we examined five different pretreatment methods for the extraction of VOCs by SPME, and finally were able to identify some potential candidate biomarkers for lung cancer.
