• Some birds contained diol waxes, diesters of long chain diols, in their preen glands. The chemical structures of such diols were determined to be 2, 3-alkanediols of C<SUB>18</SUB>-C<SUB>24</SUB> by means of gas chromatographic analyses on their three derivatives, <I>i.e</I>., analysis of the oxidized products with periodic acid, preparation and analysis of isopropylidene derivatives and analysis of the corresponding hydrocarbons obtained through tosyl derivatives.
