Since adipose tissue was known to be metabolically very active, much attention has been paid on triglyceride and free fatty acid metabolism, but little is known on phospholipids. The purpose of the present study was to clarify the composition of phospholipids in adipose tissue in relation with their biosynthesis.<BR>More oleic and less stearic acids were found in phospholipids in adipose tissue than in those in any other analyzed organs. This tendency was consistently observed in human as well as rabbits adipose tissue. Subfraction was performed on a particular phospholipid sample of rabbit. Lecithin was found to be the major phospholipid, amounting to about 75%. This was separated arbitrarily into two parts according to Rf values. Fast moving lecithin was observed to have more stearic and arachidonic acid. Slow moving part had more palmitic and less arachidonic acid. This result indicated that heterogeneity of phospholipids was also present in adipose tissue.
