The purpose of this study is to examine safety education in Meiji era public schools from the journal"Gakko Eiser". This journal was published by"Gakko Eisei Kenkyu-kai"(Research of School Hygiene Association) from May 1903 to September 1905.<BR>The stated purpose of the journal"Gakko Eisei"was to initiate and develop school hygiene education in Meiji era, Japan.<BR>In spite of its long range educational objective, the publication period of the journal was very short. Knowing the reasons for the journal's short history is vital for understanding the history of health education in Japan.<BR>The purpose of the journal"Gakko Eisei"can be found in the arguments of the chief editor Chomatsu HARADA, who made many contribution to the advancement of health education of Japan. In addition to editing the journal, all of the articles were also written under his supervision.<BR>He maintained that an educator should especially attach great importance to the safety of children, who are in the midst of their development process.<BR>From the viewpoint of his original education the ory of school hygiene, Mr. Harada also discussed children' s safety away from school.<BR>These articles can be summarized in the following themes: swimming, bicycle, sucide, war, typhoons, and floods.
