Impact of working alone or in groups on a male nurse's burnout

Aim: Male nurses in Japan are still relatively rare, and some suffer serious burnout, possibly due to social isolation. Here we tested whether or not reduced isolation, as measured by additional male peers in the same unit, is associated with reduced burnout scores.Methods: In a 2007 cross-sectional study, a self-administered questionnaire was distributed to 1,361 male nurses at 46 hospitals (≥800 beds). The questionnaire contained the Japanese version of the Maslach Burnout Inventory, including the Emotional Exhaustion, Depersonalization, and Lack of Accomplishment subscales. In addition, subjects supplied the following information: nursing experience (years); license type (Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse); shift rotation (rapid: 3 shifts, or slow: 2 shifts); nursing career status (first career or not); family status (supporting a family or not); unit type (psychiatric ward or not); working unit (desired or not). Responses obtained from inpatient-ward nurses were analyzed according to the number of males in the unit.Results: Valid responses were obtained from 654 male nurses, 417 of which were from inpatient wards. Three multiple logistic regression analyses were performed while controlling for confounding variables. Results indicated that male nurses working together in the same unit do not experience significantly less burnout than isolated male nurses.Conclusion: Our findings here suggest that working with additional male nurses does not seem to help reduce burnout in Japanese male nurses. However, because this study surveyed large hospitals with more male nurses than average, generalization to nurses in smaller hospitals requires caution.
