Development and in vitro evaluation of an outside-flow type artificial lung with plastics heat exchanger

A novel artificial lung (AL) with heat exchanger using plastics tubes has been developed and evaluated in vitro. In this AL, blood flows outside and across the bundles of microporous polypropylene hollow fibers and plastics tubes. This AL showed high performance for oxygenation and heat-exchange: the oxygen saturation showed approximately 95% at the blood flow rate of 3μmin·m2 and the heat-exchange performance was equal to or higher those using the stainless tubes. Moreover, the values of pressure drop were sufficient for gravity venous drainage.
