We developed small-caliber xenografts using new technology and evaluated the potential application for aortocoronary bypass grafting. Fresh sheep and bovine carotid arteries were treated with a polyepoxy compound. A segment of the graft was used between the aorta and the LOX of a dog. For the experiment, twenty mongrel dogs were used, 17 for the ovine graft and 3 for the bovine graft. There were 14 animals (ovine graft n=11, bovine graft n=3) in group 1 and 6 animals (ovine graft n=6) in group 2. In 6 dogs (group 2), angiography was performed to confirm graft patency between 2 and 3 weeks. The patency rate was 50% during the mean observation period of 17.5 days. We concluded that our developed grafts had a satisfactory patency in aortocoronary bypass grafting.
