The Medtronic-Hall valve was used for heart valve replacement in 84 patients from April 1987 to March 1991. Aortic valve replacement (AVR) was performed in 29 patients, mitral valve replacement (MVR) in 40, aortic and mitral valve replacement (DVR) in 14, pulmonary valve replacement in one. The mean age was 53 years. There were 4 operative (hospital) deaths (3 cases in AVR; 10%, 1 case in DVR; 7%).Follow up was complete in 83 patients (98.8%) with a mean of 33 month. The actuarial survival rate at 4 years was 76±10% for AVR, 70±14% for MVR, and 93±7% for DVR. The freedom from thromboembol is complication at 4 years was 92±5% for AVR, 95±4% for MVR, and 100% for DVR. The actuarial freedom from valve-related death at 4 years was 100% for AVR and DVR, 82±13% for MVR. We have experianced stuck valve in mitral position in 3 cases, but managed to get rid of the troubles. The clinical results obtained with the Medtronic-Hall valve have been gratifying.
