A total of 23 patients undergone 19mm aortic valve replacement (AVR), including those in whom the prosthetic valve orifice appeared to be small in size in proportion to the body surface area, was assessed post-operatively for prognosis and motion echocardiographic findings as well as for serum LDH and total bilirubin levels as determined later than 1 month after operation. We used SJM valve in 18 patients and Duromedics valve (DM group) in 5 patients. We lost none of them within 30 days of operation; the patient's functional capacity as classified according to the NYHA criteria improved all cases from postoperatively. Average serum LDH values were 398±97mU/ml for the SJM group and 488±63mU/ml for the DM group, while serum total bilirubin values averaged 0.70±0.23mg/ dl for the SJM group and 0.83±0.17mg/dl for the DM group. It is concluded that 19mm AVR revealed no significant postoperative disadvantage compared with use of the artificial aortic valve of 21mm or wider.
