Fact-Finding Survey of Antithrombotic Treatment for Prevention of Cerebral and Systemic Thromboembolism in Patients with Non-Valvular Atrial Fibrillation in 9 Countries of the Asia-Pacific Region

Along with the aging of population, the prevalence of atrial fibrillation (AF) has been rapidly increasing. AF has been gaining much attention as one of the major causes of cerebral infarction. It is imperative to establish antithrombotic treatment for AF patients.<BR>So far, guidelines for the antithrombotic treatment have been released in the United States, Europe and Japan. European Society of Cardiology has just published new guidelines including verification of the effectiveness of direct thrombin and factor Xa inhibitors. When we look at the Asia-Pacific region, antithrombotic treatment has not yet been defined and no such guideline exists. In 2010, the Asia Pacific Heart Rhythm.<BR>Society (APHRS) founded the “Practice Guideline Subcommittee” (Chairman: S. Ogawa) with its major purpose to formulate its own treatment guidelines as a goal. As part of the first step preparation, the subcommittee conducted a Web based survey to elucidate current situations of antithrombotic treatment in nine countries. The result of the survey of a total of 450 cardiologists will be unveiled in this session.<BR>We believe that the result may give us a foothold for the next step, i.e., formulation of the APHRS practice guidelines.
