Sudden cardiac death (SCD) describes the unexpected natural death from a cardiac cause within a short time period, generally within 1 hour from the onset of symptoms, in a person without any prior condition that would appear fatal. Despite the multiple advances in the field of cardiovascular medicine, the incidence of SCD continues to rise. In 60 to 80% of cases, SCD occurs in the setting of coronary artery disease. Most instances of SCD are thought to involve ventricular tachycardia degenerating to ventricular fibrillation and subsequent asystole. Because the implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) is effective in terminating ventricular tachycardia and fibrillation, the application of ICD has markedly increased. However, the application of ICD needs to be indivisualized for the patient, similar to drug therapies in LV systolic dysfunction. Standardized incidence rate of non-traumatic out-of hospital cardiac arrest was 20.9 (per 100,000) in 2006 and 22.2 in 2007 in Korea. This result shows a low incidence rate compared with that of USA and Canada. However, this data was not population based study is the embulance based study. So, the exact situation of sudden cardiac death in Korea is not clear. We need the further study.
