The Influence Factors and Significance of Atrial Fibrillation Converted to Sinus Rhythm by Ablation in Patients with Persistent Atrial Fibrillation

Objective: To investigate the influence factors and significance of atrial fibrillation (AF) converted to sinus rhythm (SR) by ablation in patients with persistent AF. Methods: A total of 200 consecutive patients (mean age 57.3±10.9 years, 156 male) with persistent AF were enrolled in this study, and underwent radiofrequency catheter ablation for the first time in individualized ablation strategy. A 3-month blanking period was resumed. Results: Thirty-two patients converted to sinus rhythm from AF directly, 62 patients converted to atrial tachycardia (AT) and terminated to SR by further ablation, and 31 patients converted to AT but be terminated by cardioversion. AF was not terminated in 75 patients (37.5%) and cardioversion was required. After a mean follow-up of 39.7±17.5 months, the overall success was 67.0%. There was a lower recurrent incidence (29.8% vs. 57.5%, p=0.001) in patients SR restored by ablation compared to the others. Left atrial (LA) diameter (β=－0.070, exp(b)=0.933, p=0.007) and AF duration (β=－0.019, exp(b)=0.982, p=0.003) were both found to be multivariate predictors of AF converted to SR by ablation during the first procedure. Conclusions: AF duration and LA diameter were multivariate predictors of AF converted to SR by ablation. AF converted to SR correlated with a lower recurrent incidence.
