Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is the most common cause of death in North America and an increasing public health problem worldwide. The social, cultural, economic, educational and care pathway barriers to prevention of sudden cardiac death will be discussed. The challenges at the patient, health care provider, public and policy levels with respect to raising increased awareness of the problem of SCA, identifying patients at risk, addressing barriers to care and eliminating disparities to care will be addressed. At the population level, prevention is a challenge as the initial presentation of cardiac disease may be SCA. The development of new educational tools to increase public perception of the problem and to enable patients to participate more actively in decisions related to their medical care are important. Tools to reduce gaps in screening for risk of SCA and implementing prevention strategies are vital to identifying and treating patients at risk. The development of care pathways specific to SCA prevention may reduce disparities in care. Health care economics is an important issue influencing current barriers to prevention of sudden cardiac death.
