ELECTROMANOMETRIC AND MYOGRAPHICAL STUDIES BY MEANS OF INTRALUMINAL RECORDING WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO THE ESOPHAGEAL MOTILITY

Using a newly deviced method for simultaneous recording the electromanometric and myographic motility of the esophagus, patterns of the positive wave and the action potential by swallowing were discussed in canine cases and human beings.<BR>Regarding the onsets of appearance of the positive wave and the action potentia of theintraluminal pressure of esophagus by swallowing, these appeared first at the upper, next at the middle and then at the lower esophagus.<BR>The different onsets of appearance of the positive wave and the action potential were showed asfollows. At the upper esophagus the positive wave and the action potential appeared almost at the same time. On the other hand at the middle and low esophagus the action potential appeared earlier than the positive wave with about 0.5 seconddifference on an average.<BR>The duration of the positive wave and the action potential of the esophagus were as follows. At the lower esophagus both showed longer duration than at the other parts of the esophagus and comparatively the positive wave showed longer than the action potential. At the upper part of the esophagus the durations of the action potential and the positive wave appeared for 2.5 second and 3.9 second, respectively. At the lower part of the esophagusformer appeared for 2.8 second and latter for 4.8 second, respectively.<BR>In accordance with the intraluminal pressure of the esophagus the length of the positive wavewas associated pararelly with the amplitude of the action potential. The mean length of the positive wave at the upper portion of the esophagus was 52.3cm H<SUB>2</SUB>O and the mean amplitude of the action potential was 360μV on an average. At the lower esophagus the length of the positive wave was 54.4 second and the amplitude of the action potential was 507μV. These suggests that the values of the positive wave and the action potential increased toward the lower part of the esophagus.
