As an electrophysiological study of the uterus with an IUD, electromyograms of the uterus and Fallopian tube were recorded. The electromyographical information, which reflects the influence of an IUD on the activities of the uterus and Fallopian tube, was obtained and is presented here.
By the use of extracellular electrodes and straingauge-transducer, the electromyograms and mechanograms of the rat uterus with an IUD and the electromyograms of the uterus and oviduct in rabbit with an IUD were studied and the following results were obtained.
1) In cases of rat and rabbit, the electrical activities were observed to be increased as compared with control horn. And in rat, the amplitude of the uterine contraction was also observed to be increased.
2) Such increased electrical activities and uterine contractions are probably related with the following factors such as the position of an IUD, the period elapsing after the insertion of the IUD, size of an IUD and the kind of the material.
3) The presence of an IUD within the uterus has no influence on the electromyograms of Fallopian tube.
