To study the effects of kendo uniform and protectors on body temperatures during exercise in a hot environment, we compared three trials ; the exercise with shorts at a dry bulb temperature of 25.4(SD ; 0.5)°C and a wet bulb temperature of 21.2(1.8)°C, the exercise with shorts at a dry bulb temperature of 30.5(0.4)°C and a wet bulb temperature of 23.6(1.3)°C, and the exercise with kendo uniform and protectors at a dry bulb temperature of 30.5(0.5)°C and a wet bulb temperature of 24.2(1.4)°C. Four male college kendo fencers performed 30min bicycle exercise at the intensity of 90% of ventilation threshold (135±23watt). There were no significant differences in the rates of change in heart rate, blood pressure, body weight, hematocrit, serum total protein concentration, serum osmolarity, and plasma concentrations of catecholamine and vasopressin among the three trials. In the trial with kendo uniform and protectors, however, tympatic temperature and skin temperatures during exercise were significantly higher than those in the other trials. We conclude that the exercise with kendo uniform and protectors in a hot environment may result in the marked increases in body temperatures, even though the exercise would be mild, and the degrees of circulatory responses and dehydration would not be affected by the wear during the exercise.
