Shiga University of Medical Science was founded in October 1974, as the only Medical School in Shiga Prefecture, based on the new inception of a university, free from traditional practice and institution. In planning the library, the library committee decided the library should assume the roles of a research library and a learning resources centre, as well as a regional biomedical information centre serving health professionals in the prefecture, aiming the library to be disclosed to the community. After the years of activities in a provisional library building, the construction of the new library was completed in February 1979.The library committee constructed a general view of the library so that it can function as an information centre serving the users within and outside the university; the library has so far conducted the following programs; (i) promotion of audio-visual education; (ii) participation in the biomedical communication network; (iii) promotion of the use of the library by allied health professionals; and (iv) disclosure of the library to the community.During the period of establishing the foundation of the library, several problems were revealed. Most of these are common to all newly founded medical colleges.Having layed the foundation of the library, it has to make its "way to self-dependence."
