Manual information retrievals, especially in a specific field of medicine, are sometimes accomplished as well rapidly and effectively with the abstracts section provided in a primary journal as with the existing secondary journal. In order to make it clear, the author analysed the "Abstracts of Current Literature (ACL)" section of the journal RADIOLOGY, vol. 102-103 (Jan.-June, 1972), and compared the availability of this section as a literature retrieval tool with Biological Abstracts (BA), Excerpta Medica (EM), and Index Medicus (IM).The results show, that this section covers 77 primary journals; more than 60 percent of articles appeared in 7 out of 77 journals, while 4 journals out of the 77 primary journals are not covered in BA, EM, and IM. Average time lag of these abstracts of articles is 6.3 months after the publication of primary journals covered. The annual cumulative index of the ACL section shows 2 to 6 number of index terms per an article. In regard to the time lag and the number of index terms, it was found that the ACL section is compatible with those of the existing secondary journals in the case of searching interesting articles to radiologists.
