In the 1984 MEDLINE file, there are no major changes of medical periodicals to be indexed, the indexing methods and MeSH. Monographic proceedings, however, are no longer indexed as in the past MEDLINE file. In previous MEDLINE indexing, all authors, were included therein, but in the 1984 file, a limited number of authors up to ten, can be included. Articles written in the Japanese language and those written in the cyrillic are, still, exceptions, maintaining a limit of five authors. A total of 99 new MeSH descriptors are added to the new MeSH and 113 deleted or replaced by other descriptors; so that a total number of descriptors are almost the same as in the 1983 MeSH (ca. 14, 000). In 1984, a new online indexing has been introduced to the MEDLINE file indexers, so that the users of the MEDLINE file can expect to receive faster informations through the file. New terminals (VDT) are being used with amber filters on the front of the VDT, to protect the indexers from occupational hazards-including eye strain.
