After the Second World War the need to rebuild the libraries in West-Germany led to a system of special collections attached to various places, maintained with the help of the German Research Association (DFG). Later in the 60 ies in some cases, central libraries were established, a process which took some time due to the fact that for nation-wide actions in education, science and culture the aprovement of the states is necessary. The Central Medical Library developed from the Medical library of the Department of Medicine University of Cologne. Still integrated in the university campus but no longer part of the university itself, the library has developed to the second busiest library in Germany which more than 240, 000 requests from outside per year, either through interlibrary-loan (free of charge) or through a prepaid coupon-service, and about 200, 000 requests per year from local users. Building up especially the collection of journals, the library can respond to the growing demand for documents, raised by the sophisticated use of various database-systems.
