It is well known that letters journals originated from the columns of "Letters to the editor" in primary journals. They have been founded to shorten publication gap, publishing short, preliminary reports of great importance and general interest, and expecting the authors to publish follow up papers in their parent journals. The device of letters journals was highly praised in Weinberg Report. On the other hand, however, Kean and Ronayne (1972) concluded from their citation analysis of two letters journals in chemistry, that these journals were not fulfilling their declared aim.In this paper we studied the effectiveness of letters in physical sciences and life sciences, using Science Citation Index (SCI). Our citation analysis of the sample of letters shows that letters are most frequently used in the fields of high energy physics, biochemistry and molecular biology. In medicine letters are few in number but receive the high rate of citation.
