Medical library services are available to students and doctors: undergraduates, postgraduates, residents, and so on. What kind of information and how they try to obtain it from the medical library differs according to their status. Therefore, as their status changes, librarians must instruct them repeatedly on how to use the medical library. For example, professionals must keep up their high intellectual and technical levels. This requires that they perform research using library materials. Librarians can teach them efficient usage of the library and assist them in promoting their research. What we call 'user education' is one of the most important tasks of librarians. Medical librarians need to include various items in the user education program, among which general orientation concerning the library and documentation guidance are, we consider, important. Information retrieval is one of the most efficient tools in documentation guidance, and is considered to be necessary for general undergraduates. Therefore, Osaka City University Medical School has a lecture on information retrieval for general undergraduates. This paper reports on the user education program in Osaka City University Medical Library.
