• It is no exception that grade-up of new media has brought about information systems which enable users themselves to search into academic library scene. With this situation what standpoint as searcher should a librarian take?It seems ideal that users carry out simple searching by themselves while a librarian plays a role as searching consultant for those users. Online information retrieval remains to be powerful and useful tool for some reasons; 1) less time lag in processing for update and in marketing and 2) it can be accessed at any place because it needs no dedicated application for searching compared to CD-ROM which has made remarkable progress in recent years. Online information services which are available in Japan are summarized in terms of which databases in the areas of medical science, pharmacology, natural sciences and environmental science are provided on which systems.
