Asahimachi Library, Niigata University has special, rare medical collections from the Edo and the Meiji periods that have been maintained by the former Niigata Medical School since the Meiji period. There are three important collections. The Morita Collection contains old manuscripts, Dutch-Japanese dictionaries, and other rare medical books from the Edo period. They are some of very few hand-written materials that have survived from that era. We constructed an image database of this collection, which is the first attempt of its kind in Japanese medical libraries. This database was developed by a joint team of the library staff and history teaching staff of Niigata University, and thus it has a superior search system for bibliographic data as well as an excellent image data system, The Takeyama Collection and the Fujita Collection also contain rare old medical books published both in Japan and in other countries in the 18th and the 19th centuries. We have constructed a bibliographic database of these two collections, and used the data to automatically prepare printed catalogs. In this paper we describe how we constructed these databases, especially the image-database of the Morita Collection. Another feature is a description of how we conduct public relations in mass-media, such as the Internet, newspapers, and TV. The results of the announcement were so great that many people visited our library and home page. The room in which these collections are exhibited has become a popular site for the public. After releasing these works, the old medical collections proved to be very important materials in modern medical libraries.
