Medical libraries are moving towards providing their services electronically by utilizing the World Wide Web, and usability has recently, become important in evaluation of the Web. In this study, we investigated trends in medical libraries' Web content and the usability of Web sites in Japan. Almost all libraries provided library information, news, links to other sites, electronic journals, and licensed databases, while scholar achievement databases and electronic teaching materials were found as original content. The characteristics of an easy-to-use Web site are: 1. The homepage summarizes all the information at the site. 2. None of the pages contain excessive numbers of characters or letters. 3. No special terms are used. 4. The design is pleasing to the eye. 5. Spelling mistakes and dead links are avoided. Web sites must be tested to ensure that they can be understood and can be displayed on all computers. The role of libraries on the Web is to help users find the information they need.
