Barium oxide has been found to react with water vapor at temperatures from 1443 to 1593 K to form gaseous Ba(OH)2 according to the reaction; BaO(s)+H2O(g)→Ba(OH)2(g). The standard free energy of formation is given by the equation, Δ<I>G</I>r°=49400–16.6 T (cal/mol) in the present temperature range. From the thermodynamic cycle the bond energy between barium and two hydroxyl groups has been found to be 196.8 kcal/mol.
