The compounds, 3-amino-9<I>H</I>-pyrido[3,4-<I>b</I>]indole and 3-amino-1-methyl-9<I>H</I>-pyrido[3,4-<I>b</I>]indole, which are effectors in induction of sister chromatid exchanges in human cells, were isolated from pyrolysis products of L-tryptophan and characterized by HPLC and UV techniques.
