The resistance of the nascent fibril produced by Acetobacter xylinum to alkali is lower than that of the crystalline cellulose I and higher than that of the amorphous cellulose. In the nascent fibril the cellulose chains are thougth to be in the form of cellulose sheets corresponding to the (1\bar10) plane of cellulose I.
