• Optically active 4-diethoxyphosphinyl-3-(1-hydroxyethyl)-2-azetidinone (<B>8</B>) was synthesized from (2<I>R</I>,3<I>R</I>) <I>N</I>-diethoxyphosphinylmethyl-2,3-epoxybutyramide derivatives, and compound <B>8</B> was alternatively synthesized from (3<I>R</I>,4<I>R</I>)-4-acetoxy-3-[(<I>R</I>)-1-(<I>t</I>-butyldimethylsilyloxy)ethyl]-2-azetidinone via 3-[1-(<I>t</I>-butyldimethylsilyloxy)ethyl] derivative.
