The enthalpy and entropy changes have been estimated for the formation of a triplet-state (1:2) terplex as well as an ordinary (1:1) exciplex between triplet chloranil (3CA) and mesitylene (M) in carbon tetrachloride. Results indicate that the terplex is energetically less stable than the bimolecular exciplex, while the stabilization of the terplex is compensated by the positive entropy change associated with transformation from the exciplex to the terplex.
