Interfacial adsorption of 1,10-phenanthroline complexes in solvent extraction systems.

A significant adsorptivity of tris(1,10-phenanthroline)iron(II), [Fe(phen)<SUB>3</SUB>]<SUP>2+</SUP>, at the interface of chloroform or carbon tetrachloride/0.1 M aqueous sodium chloride systems was determined by means of interfacial tension measurements at 25 °C. In the distribution systems of phen containing Zn(II) or Cu(II), a characteristic interfacial tension lowering was observed and interpreted in terms of an interfacial adsorption of metal–phen complexes.
