Reactions of [M<SUB>2</SUB>HgI<SUB>4</SUB>] with excess of HSO<SUB>3</SUB>Cl afford M<SUB>2</SUB>[Hg(SO<SUB>3</SUB>Cl)<SUB>4</SUB>] (M=Cu(I), K). However, the reactions of K<SUB>2</SUB>HgI<SUB>4</SUB> with stoichiometric amounts of HSO<SUB>3</SUB>Cl, i.e., in 1 : 3, 1 : 2, and 1 : 1 molar ratios, yield K<SUB>2</SUB>[Hg(SO<SUB>3</SUB>Cl)<I><SUB>n</SUB></I>I<SUB>4−<I>n</I></SUB>](<I>n</I>=3,2,1). In these reactions HSO<SUB>3</SUB>Cl acts as both chlorosulfating agent as well as medium of the reaction. Et<SUB>4</SUB>NI reacts with Cu<SUP>I</SUP><SUB>2</SUB>[Hg(SO<SUB>3</SUB>Cl)<SUB>4</SUB>] suspended in CH<SUB>2</SUB>Cl<SUB>2</SUB> affording (Et<SUB>4</SUB>N)<SUB>2</SUB>[Hg(SO<SUB>3</SUB>Cl)<SUB>2</SUB>I<SUB>2</SUB>] and [CuSO<SUB>3</SUB>Cl]<I><SUB>x</SUB></I>. All these compounds have been characterized by elemental analysis, electrical conductivity measurements, IR and electronic spectral studies.
