The carrier density and thickness of both the semiconductor and ion-sensing membrane were found to significantly affect the sensitivity of ion-sensing devices with a junction of n-type SnO<SUB>2</SUB> and cation-selective plasticized polymeric membranes. When an anion-selective membrane was employed instead, the resulting device responded in a different way from the corresponding cation-sensing device.
