Deuterium was effectively introduced into the title sugar (<B>1a</B>) at C-1, C-3, C-5, and C-6 to afford 1,5-anhydro-D-[1-<SUP>2</SUP>H<SUB>1</SUB>], -[3-<SUP>2</SUP>H], -[5-<SUP>2</SUP>H], -[1-<SUP>2</SUP>H<SUB>2</SUB>], -[6-<SUP>2</SUP>H<SUB>2</SUB>], and -[5,6-<SUP>2</SUP>H<SUB>3</SUB>]glucitols respectively as primary targets for a basic study of the unknown metabolism of <B>1a</B>, which had been suggested to be a candidate of metabolic indexes for insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus.
