• The ultraviolet absorption spectra of olefins adsorbed on the platinum catalyst supported on silica were studied. By comparing the absorption bands of olefins adsorbed on the platinum catalyst with the chrage-transfer bands of platinum-olefin complexes, the observed bands could be interpreted as being due to the electronic transition from filled platinum 5<I>d</I> orbitals to the empty π<SUP>*</SUP> orbital of adsorbed olefins.
