5-[2-(5-Nitro-2-furyl)-1-(4-nitrophenyl)vinyl]-1,3,4-oxadiazoles and -1,3,4-thiadiazoles have been prepared from 3-(5-nitro-2-furyl)-2-(4-nitrophenyl)acrylic acid. All of these compounds exhibited strong antibacterial activities against <I>Staphylococcus aureus</I>.
