• Fumaronitrile complexes, M(FMN)(AsPh<SUB>3</SUB>)<SUB>2</SUB> (M=Pd, Pt and FMN=fumaronitrile), have been prepared. Various chelating agents replaced AsPh<SUB>3</SUB> in the complexes, giving M(FMN)L (L is a chelating agent containing N, P, or As as donor atoms). The chemical shift of the methine protons of these complexes increased in the order:<BR>Pd–As<Pd–P<Pt–As<Pt–P.<BR>This is probably the increasing order of the π-back donation in these complexes. The UV spectra of the complexes are also described.
