The rate of oxygen exchange between selenite ions and solvent water has been measured at 0°C over the pH range of 8.7–12.5. The rate of exchange, <I>R</I>, may be expressed by the rate law;<BR><I>R</I>=<I>k</I>1[SeO32−]+<I>k</I>2[HSeO3−]+<I>k</I>3[HSeO3−]2+<I>k</I>4[HSeO3−][SeO32−].<BR>The observed rates were analysed in order to obtain the values of the rate constants. The over-all exchange reaction shows a negative salt effect; this has been shown to be an equilibrium salt effect on the dissociation of the hydrogen selenite ion.
