Thermal Reaction in a Series of Ammineisothiocyanatochromium(III) Complexes in Solid State

The thermal decomposition of [Cr(NH<SUB>3</SUB>)<SUB>6</SUB>](SCN)<SUB>3</SUB>, [Cr(NCS)(NH<SUB>3</SUB>)<SUB>5</SUB>](SCN)<SUB>2</SUB> and <I>cis</I>-[Cr(NCS)<SUB>2</SUB>(NH<SUB>3</SUB>)<SUB>4</SUB>]SCN in solid state was studied by isothermal as well as continuous temperature-rise methods. Under isothermal heating at 140°C, [Cr(NH<SUB>3</SUB>)<SUB>6</SUB>](SCN)<SUB>3</SUB> changed stepwise to <I>cis</I>, <I>trans</I>-[Cr(NCS)<SUB>3</SUB>(NH<SUB>3</SUB>)<SUB>3</SUB>] through <I>trans</I>-[Cr(NCS)<SUB>2</SUB>(NH<SUB>3</SUB>)<SUB>4</SUB>]SCN, [Cr(NCS)(NH<SUB>3</SUB>)<SUB>5</SUB>](SCN)<SUB>2</SUB> turning to the <I>cis</I>-<I>trans</I> complex over the <I>trans</I> complex in the same manner as [Cr(NH<SUB>3</SUB>)<SUB>6</SUB>](SCN)<SUB>3</SUB>. Under the continuous temperature-rise, [Cr(NH<SUB>3</SUB>)<SUB>6</SUB>](SCN)<SUB>3</SUB>, [Cr(NCS)(NH<SUB>3</SUB>)<SUB>5</SUB>](SCN)<SUB>2</SUB> as well as <I>trans</I>-[Cr(NCS)<SUB>2</SUB>(NH<SUB>3</SUB>)<SUB>4</SUB>]SCN were found to be directly converted into <I>cis</I>,<I>trans</I>-[Cr(NCS)<SUB>3</SUB>(NH<SUB>3</SUB>)<SUB>3</SUB>].
