• The reaction mechanism and kinetic-rate constants of the pentacyanocobaltate(II)-catalyzed hydrogenation of olefins were investigated. The present study with an iterative simulation technique supported the Co(CN)<SUB>5</SUB><SUP>3−</SUP>+H<SUB>2</SUB>→Co(CN)<SUB>5</SUB>H<SUP>3−</SUP>+H· and Co(CN)<SUB>5</SUB><SUP>3−</SUP>+H·→Co(CN)<SUB>5</SUB>H<SUP>3−</SUP> reactions for the uptake of H<SUB>2</SUB> by the cobaltate(II) during the initial stage of the reaction. An examination was also made of the stationary-state approximation used for the kinetic analysis of the reaction.
