• The oxidation of benzyl <I>p</I>-tolyl sulfide with active halogeno compounds such as <I>N</I>-bromosuccinimide, <I>N</I>-chlorosuccinimide and <I>t</I>-butyl hypochlorite, affords optically-active benzyl <I>p</I>-tolyl sulfoxide. The absolute configuration of the sulfoxide obtained depends on the chirality of the alcohols used.
