γ-Rays treatment of earthy odors in public water supplies due to the metabolites in Lake Biwa was studied. The odorous compound was isolated from the metabolites and was identified to be geosmin by the use of gas chromatographmass spectrometer. The effect of additives and competition reaction with p-nitroso-N,N-dimethylaniline revealed that geosmin is decomposed effectively by hydroxyl radical produced by the radiolysis of water.
