Styrene was graft-polymerized on kaolin clay treated with silane coupling agents <I>e.g.</I> (γ-methacryloyloxypropyl)trimethoxysilane. Although the silane-styrene copolymer was soluble in benzene, the polystyrene-grafted clay swelled in the same medium. A clay-crosslinked, threedimensional structure is suggested and conditions for gelation are also discussed.
