A study of the radiation-induced addition of HSO3− to allyl alcohol was carried out in D2O–H2O mixtures. It was found that a linear relationship held between the apparent rate constant of NaHSO3 consumption and the atom fraction of deuterium in the mixture, and that the hydrogen atom abstraction from HSO3− by HOCH2\dotCH-CH2SO3− was the rate-determining step. The kinetic isotope effect of this abstraction was 4.38.
