The structure and configuration of an antibiotic, ikarugamycin, have been established to be <B>1e</B> on the basis of chemical reactions, especially of oxidative degradation. It is suggested that the <I>as</I>-hydrindacene skeleton arises biogenetically <I>via</I> an intramolecular Diels-Alder reaction.
