Magnesium ion retards the reduction of thiopivalophenone with 1-benzyl-1,4-dihydronicotinamide (BNAH) in acetonitrile. Kinetics and other investigation have revealed that the retardation is due to the formation of non-reactive complexes, thiopivalophenone·Mg2+ and BNAH·Mg2+.
