(3-Formyl-2-hydroxyphenyl) trimethylammonium (<B>2</B>) and (3-formyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)trimethylammonium salts (<B>3</B>) have been prepared from the corresponding 3- and 5-nitrosalicylaldehydes <I>via</I> the 3- and 5-(dimethylamino)salicylaldehydes. The catalytic activities of <B>2</B>, <B>3</B>, and the (2-formyl-3-hydroxyphenyl)trimethylammonium salt have been studied at pH 10 and at 80 °C in the presence of copper(II) ion.
