• The reaction of benzene with 2-phenylpentanedioic anhydride in the presence of AlCl<SUB>3</SUB> afforded a mixture of 1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-4-oxo-1-naphthalenecarboxylic acid, 4-benzoyl-2-phenylbutanoic acid and the isomeric 4-benzoyl-4-phenylbutanoic acid. The relative yields among the products were markedly affected by a change in the polarity of the solvent.
