Formation of Benzyl Radicals by Pulse Radiolysis of Benzyltriphenylphosphonium Chloride in Aqueous Solutions

The reaction of benzyltriphenylphosphonium ion (PhCH<SUB>2</SUB>P<SUP>+</SUP>Ph<SUB>3</SUB>) with e<SUB>aq</SUB><SUP>−</SUP> has been studied. The benzyl radical and triphenylphospine are formed by the reaction: PhCH<SUB>2</SUB>P<SUP>+</SUP>Ph<SUB>3</SUB>+e<SUB>aq</SUB><SUP>−</SUP>→PhCH<SUB>2</SUB>·+Ph<SUB>3</SUB>P, with the rate constant (2.7±0.3)×10<SUP>10</SUP> M<SUP>−1</SUP> s<SUP>−1</SUP>. The benzyl radical decays in a bimolecular reaction with 2<I>k</I>=(2.7±0.4)×10<SUP>9</SUP> M<SUP>−1</SUP> s<SUP>−1</SUP>.
