Bromination of flavanone, 6-methylflavanone, 6-methyl-4′-methoxyflavanone, and 6-methyl-3′,4′-dimethoxyflavanone with pyridinium tribromide in glacial acetic acid gives the corresponding 3-bromoflavanones, which when refluxed with thiourea in ethanol undergo reduction to flavanones.
